Are you someone interested in eliminating the stigma associated with substance use and substance use disorder and to contributing to the well-being of Canadians? CAPSA is currently seeking applicants to fill three (3) vacancies on its board of directors. Whether you are an ally or a person with lived or living experience with substance use disorders, we are interested in connecting with you.
CAPSA, a not-for-profit organization, is a national leader on the principle of Substance Use Health, the impact of stigma on individuals who use substances, or have a substance use disorder, and on identifying and correcting instances of systemic stigma in the workplace and in communities across Canada. CAPSA’s direct contact approach serves to reduce stigma in the workplace and to create an environment where those struggling with substances can ask for help without fear of discrimination. CAPSA employs an All People, All Pathways TM philosophy to Substance Use Health, welcoming people regardless of background and substance use history and to supporting them on the path to wellness. Through community-based initiatives, CAPSA strives to create an environment where allies can stand beside those living with a substance use disorder and work together to improve health outcomes.
CAPSA’s Board is committed to continuously improving its equity, diversity and inclusion practices and to building its anti-racist skills and effectiveness. While it is on the right path, the Board acknowledges that it is at the beginning of this journey.

We welcome candidates who are passionate about making a difference in our community, who share our commitment to inclusivity and to building a community where those seeking health around their substance use, however that may look, have access to the resources they need to live healthy and fulfilling lives.
Expectations of Board Members:

- Participate in committees, working groups and additional activities as needed throughout
- Time commitment: 4 hours/month (on average)
Attributes that matter to us:

- Engaged participation
CAPSA’s by-laws stipulate that one-third of the board of directors be comprised of members with personal experience with a substance use disorder. While CAPSA works to end stigma, we recognize that stigma still exists, and board members may not feel comfortable disclosing their lived or living experience of substance use disorder publicly. Those who identify as having direct experience are not required to share that information outside of the nominating process. In addition, diverse and/or bilingual candidates with the skills currently needed, will receive priority consideration.
We are looking for candidates with skills in the following areas:
- Government relations
- Executive leadership
To apply, please email your resume and cover letter, or send a short video, outlining your experience and interest in working with CAPSA’s Board. The CAPSA Nomination Committee will review all applications and select a pool of applicants who will then be invited to an interview. Successful incumbents will be provided with a fulsome orientation and training in advance of starting with their position with the Board.
