CAPSA Petition to Promote Wellness

Support Wellness - Petition to the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Health

Dear Minister Hajdu

Each year, tens of thousands of Canadians die from using substances. While the current opioid crisis has focussed a spotlight on the harms of substance use, the number of Canadians who die from tobacco, alcohol and other substance use far eclipse death from opioid use. In addition to the 60,000 people who die each year from substance use, at least seven family members and friends are impacted by their death. That's almost half a million Canadians who each year suffer from substance use and its damaging effects.

Too often, policies enacted by Canada's three levels of government and by private-sector employers are directed at the substances, rather than towards the health and wellness of those who use substances. These existing policies result in an increase in suffering of people who use substances. Such policies must change, else Canadians will continue to die unnecessarily.

We the undersigned urge all federal departments, beginning with Health Canada, to review its policies with a view to improving the health and wellness outcomes of Canadians who use substances.

Every year, 60,000 Canadians die due to substance use, substance use disorders, and related harms. This is an unacceptable fact that cannot continue. Together, we can make change. That’s why CAPSA is asking you to add your name to this petition.

We are calling on the Minister of Health for Canada, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, to enact all possible legislation and policy changes to support the well-being of people who use substances. Canadians are seeking policy focused on all forms of increased wellness for people using substances and their families. In addition, we recommend a complete review of all policies that people using substances have declared as being harmful to them.

Please add your name to the petition and share it on social media to show your support for those affected by substance use disorder on their pathway to wellness.
